The first edition of the first German translation of 'Remarks on the life and writings of Plato', first published in Edinburgh in 1760 by the Scottish scholar-physician Ebenezer MacFait (d. 1786). Macfait's book focuses particularly on Plato's 'Republic', and includes a defence of Plato's ideas against the criticisms which appeared in the scholarly works published by the 18th-century English politician Viscount Bolingbroke. This expanded translation was the work of Karl Morgenstern (1770-1852), at this time professor of philosophy at Halle, who had published his own commentary on the 'Republic' in 1794
